SHOWSEC PARTNER UNIVERSITY OF DERBY CORPORATE LEADING THE WAY IN EDUCATION INITIATIVE

Showsec and University of Derby Corporate launched the Foundation Degree in Applied Professional Studies specialising in Crowd Management in February 2010. This bespoke, work-based learning initiative highlights Showsec’s continued investment in future-focused education within the security and crowd management sector.

The new course has been developed by the University in close partnership with Showsec to meet the needs of learners, contributing to the longer-term development of the organisation and resulting in a formal qualification in the area of crowd management and event security. So far, 22 junior and mid-operational management executives have embarked on this flexible programme, combining academic and theoretical knowledge with work-based skills.

Conor Moss, Workforce Development Fellow at University of Derby Corporate says:
“The commitment from both parties on this project has been exemplary; the programme fits in well with our extensive selection of courses based around the events industry.

“The foundation degree has been developed to recognise the existing experience and knowledge of the individual learners, the employees, to enable them to achieve components of the course at a speed that suits them.”

Showsec’s Academy training manager Keith Hackett and the university have driven the initiative over the last six months, creating a fit for purpose qualification programme that is relevant to the current commercial environment.
Keith says:
“Showsec chose University of Derby Corporate because it is one of the leading forces in Work Based Learning. They have succeeded in translating the content of our courses, developed at the Showsec Academy, into a University framework. They have a proven record of industry-wide qualifications and experience combined with a genuinely innovative approach to learning. Add this to its’ capability to provide a full range of relevant qualifications from Level Two to Level Seven it is the ideal institution.

Matt Bromley, Assistant Subject Manager for Events Management at the University of Derby says: ‘Showsec as a company has devoted a substantial amount of time and resources to the development of this course, which illustrates their ongoing commitment to education in the industry. We look forward to developing a range of learning solutions in the future.”

Showsec Managing Director Mark Harding says:
“This is the first of a series of projects planned with The University of Derby Corporate, including a number of research projects. The university embraces the industry’s needs and fully understand Showsec’s requirements, allowing us to develop a programme that delivers far greater benefits than a more theory based course. We pride ourselves on being the driving force behind change and education in the sector, and this groundbreaking course formulates another key element in our desire to create a clearly defined career development path for all our operational staff.”
SHOWSEC TAKE THEIR FESTIVAL EXPERTISE INSIDE

Showsec provided 38 security and crowd management professionals for the first ever Outside-In Festival at The Sage Gateshead, where the 3,000 strong audience enjoyed acts including Pixie Lott, N-Dubz, Lostprophets, and Scouting For Girls, in an event that brought the atmosphere of an outdoor festival inside, avoiding the cold January weather.

Project manager Tony Hume oversaw the operation with the support of supervisors Stewart Fullarton and Victoria Emery-Scott. Showsec’s booking department selected a combination of local Newcastle and Leeds staff with a range of skills and experience. The team secured the outdoor production compound and carried out audience searches on the main entrance along with the main venue space, where there were two stages and a DJ area. One member of the team was appointed as close protection security to T4 presenter Rick Edwards for the day as he recorded interviews and moved between performances and areas.

The show was broadcast on T4, and Showsec worked with the TV production company as well as the venue management to ensure the safety of all guests and performers. An event of this nature poses particular challenges, one of which saw headliners N-Dubz unexpectedly walking through the crowd together with a TV presenter and camera crew. Two Showsec response teams dealt with this occurrence quickly and efficiently, under the direction of Stewart Fullarton.

The Outside-In Festival formed part of Newcastle Gateshead’s world-class programme of festivals and events, and funds raised by the event went towards some of The Prince’s Trust’s charity initiatives in the North East.

Natalie Bowman, Front of House Duty Manager at The Sage, was delighted with Showsec’s service:
“We chose Showsec to complement our existing world class Customer Service Team when hosting the Outside-In Festival at The Sage Gateshead because their reputation for excellence is equal to our own. Having worked with them before we knew the service would be flexible, efficient and professional, and they delivered on all counts.”

SHOWSEC SUCCESS AT BRIT AWARDS 2010

Showsec delivered a professional, complex security and crowd management operation at the Brit Awards 2010, where international artists and music industry VIPs gathered for the prestigious ceremony under the glare of the world’s media.

Earls Court welcomed Lady Gaga, Dizzee Rascal, JLS, Robbie Williams and other high profile award winners to the Brits spectacular 30th anniversary show on Tuesday night.

Showsec’s team of 290 security and crowd management professionals were selected from across the Southern region and had thorough briefings prior to the event. Presentations were made to the client, venue managers, ticketing agents and other stakeholders to ensure everyone involved in the event understood the complexities of the project and their potential contribution to its overall success.

Project manager Steve Reynolds organised and ran the multi-faceted and highly sensitive operation with key support from Showsec London area manager Paul Legge, Paul Joy (MEN venue manager), training manager Roy Wise, East Midlands area manager Richard Church and senior operations executive Dayo Adelugba. Under constant media attention, the Brits demand consistent attention to detail and exceptionally high standards, with the audience varying from VIP performers, A-list celebrities and high profile music industry executives to the public guests and press on site, as well as crowds of fans and media outside the venue.

Steve says:
“It was a fantastic night. There has been a consistent Showsec management team at the Brits over the last three years whose knowledge was invaluable developing our long term relationship with the Brits and Earls Court; combined with staff who have more recently joined us the team successfully handled the challenges that the event presented. It was particularly valuable for our recent third tranche of the Showsec Academy students who were located on the VIP arrivals area, gaining essential on-site skills to begin their education over the coming months.”
SHOWSEC WIN BLOODSTOCK FESTIVAL

Showsec has been awarded a three year contract to supply a comprehensive security and crowd management service to Bloodstock Festival.

Bloodstock organiser Paul Gregory says:
“We are delighted to confirm Showsec will manage all elements of the festival security, ensuring the health and safety of everyone on site, moving forwards from this landmark 10th anniversary festival. We are proud of our independent status which drives our commitment to produce the best event for our ‘festival family’ of audience, artists and staff.”

“We were aware that Showsec was the industry leader, but to be sure they suited our event, prior to making our decision we (the organisers) went undercover to various gigs in Showsec’s portfolio, where the company’s consistent customer service and extensive experience confirmed our beliefs.

Bloodstock will be held on 13th to 15th August at Catton Hall in Derby, the festival has grown substantially in the ten years since its conception. Paul continues:
“From its humble beginning in 2001, when we hosted a crowd of 800, the festival has seen 30 to 40% growth year on year, and in 2010 we are expecting 12,000 people per day over 3 days. As a result we have invested in our strongest ever line-up, with our first arena tour bands such as Heaven and Hell & Twisted Sister. This increase in size makes it imperative we engage professional suppliers to help us improve the festival experience. Showsec is the perfect partner to assist us in taking Bloodstock to the next level.”

Richard Church, Showsec East Midlands area manager, will project manage the festival this year. He says:
“There is a perception in the industry that we only supply the larger festivals, but in truth we have a flexible service that can be adapted to deliver results in any environment. It’s great for us to be involved with a growing independent festival, applying the knowledge and the high levels of service that Showsec is synonymous with, as Bloodstock establishes itself as a major player on the UK circuit.”

SHOWSEC ACADEMY ASSOCIATES GRADUATE

Four Associates from the Showsec Academy have successfully completed the innovative education programme and are now at working in management roles at venues throughout the country supporting Showsec’s venue and area management.

The unique course provides a structured career path within the security and crowd management industry from steward level to junior management. It combines existing management theory qualifications with security qualifications and vocational operational experience at events.

Katie Valkovics is working at the Sheffield Arena alongside Julian Kumah, Catherine Wells is working at Nottingham Trent Arena with Richard Church and Simon Howard is working in London supporting the teams at various venues. Andrew Thorn began his placement early to coincide with the opening of the new Academy Music Group venue in Birmingham.

The Academy is now preparing to welcome its third intake of Associates this February. The company has developed the course annually to ensure that it has the most benefit for the associates and fulfils industry needs.

Showsec Academy Manager Keith Hackett explained:

“This year we have modified the programme, building on two years of experience, to be a clearly focused nine month course. The work placements will be allocated at the beginning with associates being relocated immediately to these venues. This is so that they have optimum time with the in-house teams and get even more practical crowd management experience.”

SHOWSEC'S MARK HARDING SPEAKS AT INSTITUTE OF LICENSING

Showsec managing director, Mark Harding, spoke at the Institute of Licensing’s ‘Outdoor / Large Events Seminars’, held in both Bristol and London this January. Mark joined a respected panel of invited speakers at the two day conferences to debate and explore trends and new solutions to improve the effective organisation and management of outdoor events.

Mark’s seminar focused on ‘Security and Crowd Control, including licensing issues.’ He discussed recent developments in the sector, drawing on insight from the significant advances Showsec has made in recent years. The company’s ongoing development of extensive training programmes and improved operational procedures has resulted in better service and increased robustness of security offered to event organisers.

With decisions pending about the stewarding and security operations for the London 2012 Olympic Games, the seminar questioned the implications if this highest profile event adopts anything other than best practice in these areas.

Mark told the delegates:
“Over the last five years there have been significant improvements in security at live events. People need to accept that maintaining these training and licensing procedures underpins the increase in standards experienced across the sector. Permitting an exemption from these well defined existing guidelines at the London Olympics will result in the devaluation of the qualifications and weaken the event.

“For example, in 2009 we introduced CCTV training courses designed specifically to improve monitoring and communications requirements, meeting the unique needs of the live events industry and venue security; these new skills and technology should be embraced.

“Working with a number of educational establishments and supporting the Security Industry Authority (SIA) in the development of licensing and employee screening, it is now vital that we keep moving forward. We must not ignore the enormous advances of the last five years, and instead look to ensure that all personnel are properly vetted, trained, qualified and licensed to tackle the challenges that global events present.”

SHOWSEC OFFERS NEW CCTV TRAINING COURSE

Showsec’s in-house training department has developed a new CCTV course for staff designed specifically to meet the unique needs of the live events industry and venue security.

This course is accredited through the British Institute of Innkeeping Awarding Body (BIIAB) and material has been adapted by Showsec to make it more relevant to the events sector.

Showsec’s Training and Development Manager Roy Wise explained:

“Previously we were utilising outside commercial companies but found that they didn’t meet the specific needs of event and venue security. We first developed the course at Nottingham Arena and will also be evolving it to cover other venues and outdoor events, allowing the company to further enhance its ever developing services.”

Two Showsec trainers will host the four day course, covering topics including legislations, how to use different equipment and systems and techniques for effectively monitoring audiences at events.

SPORTS PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR AWARDS

Showsec showed they are in good shape when they provided the event security for the 2009 Sports Personality of the Year Awards in Sheffield. The company supplied its own award winning team - of UK security professionals, who ensured the safety of guests in the VIP pre-show party, securing all transport between venues and strategically placing response teams around the VIP audience.

With a live audience of 11,000 guests including some of the world’s most prestigious sporting personalities, the 2009 awards were the biggest ever staged.

Showsec is the in-house security partner of the Arena and Security Manager Julian Kumah took on the role of Head of Security for the awards, supported by Special Projects Manager Steve Reynolds and Supervisor Mark Wilcock.

Julian explained:

“The multi-faceted security operation started by ensuring the safety of guests as they travelled from various preshow events into Sheffield Arena. The first arrivals were from the VIP preshow party hosted by Barbra Slater, Director of Sport for the BBC at the Arena Club. Guests entered the venue along the red carpet flanked with VIP security professionals, as well as numerous media camera crews and photographers.

“The second pre-awards party was taking place at a nearby venue for which the council created a dedicated walkway. We deployed stewards to ensure the safety of 1,500 guests all travelling to the venue.

“Inside the Arena our staff showed guests to their seats ensuring the same high standards of service the teams are known for amongst regular visitors to the venue, whilst also being alert for any additional potential threats posed to the celebrity guests.

“To retain a rapid response capability while staying unobtrusive to cameras within the show area we positioned a plain clothed security teams sat amongst the VIP guests who could respond immediately if an incident had occurred. The event ran very smoothly I’m delighted to say, which was a testament to everyone involved at all levels.”

"Providing high class HR support services to the Company’s multi award winning Operational Divisions is of paramount importance," says Katie Farmer, Showsec’s newly appointed Recruitment Manager.

In October this year Showsec decided to benchmark it’s robust recruiting procedures by engaging with the Home Office on a comprehensive evaluation project which targeted a sample of over 300 of its workers. The project provided an incredible 100% success rate.

Katie said: "It revitalises both client and staff confidence. They have the assurance that our personnel services are of the highest standard in the industry."

As part of the developing relationship with the Home Office, the Company seized the opportunity to further enhance the skills and knowledge of it’s recruitment and HR personnel by undertaking supplementary training with the Home Office in Manchester. By implementing recent advances the company will reduce the possibility of staff infiltration by potential criminals targeting events and help retain the 100% effectiveness of Showsec only engaging staff who are eligible to work in the United Kingdom.

The training highlighted new techniques and methods of identifying forged documents, checking that IDs, such as passports, used are legitimate, focused on detecting imposters trying to enter the UK workforce.

Joining the HR department were the head recruiters and supervisors from the Manchester area as they are actively involved in the recruitment of stewards and SIA door supervisors.

Katie continued:

“This Home Office training will help to keep us abreast of the increasingly complex techniques and resources made available, often through international organised crime.

“We already complete comprehensive checks to deter illegal working but it is vital that we keep up to date when it comes to proof of eligibility, the law and detecting imposters who are seen as an increasing potential threat to event security, particularly if they have links to organised gangs. We will be robust in putting this into practice over the coming months.

“Showsec is very proud to work with many stewards and door supervisors from all around the world, benefitting our diverse and strong workforce. We will continue to ensure that those with the right to work in the UK get the opportunity to work with us whilst those here illegally do not.”
PHIL COBOURNE LECTURES AT BUCKINGHAMSHIRE NEW UNIVERSITY

For the third consecutive year, Buckinghamshire New University extended a special invitation to Phil Cobourne to lecture to first year students on health and safety in the crowd management and events industry.

Showsec is renowned for its ‘education for all’ policy and through research has developed a range of unique training courses in response to industry needs, of which Phil has been a driving force. This includes a comprehensive set of health and safety training courses, thereby ensuring that every Showsec team member is fully prepared to undertake their role in the workplace.

Phil explained:

“Showsec supported and helped launch the BNU initiative and we are proud to still be part of the educational programme. This is just one of the ways in which Showsec is introducing its innovative educational practice to the next generation of crowd and safety managers to ensure that they understand exactly how health and safety management works in their industry, allowing them to take what has become a very complex and diverse specialisation and apply it sensibly and practicably.”

SHOWSEC EXPANDS ITS STUDENT UNION SERVICES

Showsec has expanded its operations within the student union sector across the UK this autumn as students returned to university for the new academic year.

Moving beyond the student union, the company has secured a new contract in Bournemouth to provide security for The Old Fire Station, Bournemouth University’s official nightclub venue.

Showsec’s Tracey McCarthy and Simon Osborn will manage the security services extending from the university campus.

The nightclub venue hosts a variety of different club nights from DJ and dance through to hard rock regularly welcoming world class acts, this month welcoming Calvin Harris, Zane Lowe and Chipmunk.

Showsec provides a complete security solution for the venue which includes front of house door management, security staff positioned on all levels of the venue, specialist pit teams and close protection security for visiting artists.

This November the venue participated in ‘Block Party’, a unique club night within Bournemouth where six bars along the street join together offering one admission price and unlimited access into all venues, with live DJs performing in each until 4am. Showsec provided security services within the venue and deployed a secondary team on the road, ensuring the safety of people as they travelled between venues.

Sam Cox, Venue Manager said:

“We chose Showsec because they are a reputable national company who are highly experienced at working with live events on a big scale. Showsec is renowned for its vast training programmes which made us confident that they would deliver staff who would work to our high standards and so far our expectations have been exceeded. The team have introduced new security practices and initiatives to the venue which are working well.”
SHOWSEC SUCCESS AT MTV EUROPE MUSIC AWARDS IN BERLIN

Showsec supplied ten managers whose expertise ensured the professional implementation of complex event security plans for the 16th Annual MTV European Music Awards in Berlin this November 5th.

532 million households tuned in across the world to see the evenings events unfold. Hostess Katy Perry dazzled audiences with her array of costumes as the MTV EMA’s lived up to their glamorous reputation. Beyoncé, Jay Z, Shakira, Green Day and Tokio Hotel all added style and substance performing live in Berlin’s 02 World, while U2 played a live set to an additional 10,000 fans at the Brandenburg Gate.

Commented Jane Fraser, Co-Executive Producer, MTV Europe Music Awards:
“So many elements come into play when considering security for an event of the scale of the MTV Europe Music Awards - from forward-planning and preparation, to the understanding of stakeholder concerns to venue, production and local authority liaison. Showsec brought such a wealth of experience to the EMAs that I knew that all of these areas – and more – were under control, and this was critical to the well-being of the show. It was a pleasure working with them.”

Showsec Director Simon Battersby is the perennial Head of Security for the event, and began planning months in advance, but it was in the final weeks that intense attention to detail was required to implement the complex security plan. Accompanied by nine of Showsec’s respected UK management team, the company oversaw a multi-facetted awards security operation; that involved co-ordinating red carpet arrivals, backstage movements, dressing rooms, outside broadcasts, Front of house operations, talent hotels, international media and aftershow parties along with the U2 show at the sensitive Brandenburg Gate site. Each team member took their own element, making sure each department was managed to the level expected at a global media event.

Simon explained:

“My role was one of coordinating all the security elements of the events taking place across Berlin that week on behalf of the EMA show producers, managing and liaising with local agencies as well as internal departments at MTV and also with the US parent organisation. There were a huge number of stakeholders with their own aims and objectives, so it was vital that we selected the best suited local security providers and maintained effective communications with the local police and authorities. As always with the EMAs, the show demands huge flexibility by the host venue, operating the building in configurations that are completely different to that of a standard show format, and often contrary to its design. The O2 world in Berlin was the main awards venue, and whilst only twelve months old, the AEG management team were extremely supportive, professional and versatile to our needs”
.
“Obtaining permissions for the Brandenburg Gate performance required particularly sensitive communications, taking place four days in advance of the commemorations to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Preparations for that event meant that we couldn’t use the normal event site on the West side of the gate, so we located the show on the East of the Gate on the Pariser Platz. That meant creating a free ticketed area for 10,000 fans, with an additional viewing area with screens for an unknown number fans who could turn up. As with any city centre free ticketed concert type performance, this involves careful planning with the police, local promoter, and consideration of residents that included the American, French and British embassies, hotels and banks.

“It was a privilege to work with the MTV organisers again. Year on year we build upon an already strong relationship with the show. It was particularly special to be in Berlin at the time of the celebrations of the fall of the Berlin Wall, working and listening to the experience of Berliners, who were recalling their own personal stories of living in a divided city and country; and what the events of 9th November 1989 meant for them and how the demise of communism affected their lives”
SHOWSEC EVENT TEAM WINS SECURITY EXCELLENCE AWARD

Showsec was recognised for achieving excellence in four award categories during this October’s Security Excellence Awards. Most notably, for the fourth consecutive year, the company won the highly acclaimed Event Security Team Of The Year award, collected by London Area Manager Paul Legge from presenter Ronnie Corbett.

The company was nominated in three other categories and applauded by Brian Sims, Editor of Security Manager Today magazine. Brian hosted the prestigious awards ceremony at London’s Park Lane Hilton which was attended by over 750 security professionals, all leaders in their own sectors. Brian praised the high quality of the awards, saying, “The award finalists should feel very proud to receive the commendation of the judging panel in a year when standards have been very high.”

In selecting Showsec as winners of the Event Security Team Of The Year Award the judges commented that they had proven to be “the best, most consistent, and most innovative providers of event stewarding and security professionals.”

Showsec Operations Director Mark Logan said:

“Being recognized by the wider security industry as the leader and innovator in the events sector is a great boost to the company. More so this category honours the management and staff who facilitate our arena operations up and down the country, they work tirelessly in order to produce a high quality standardized service with their respective venue partners.

“The work of the arena staff sometimes goes unnoticed against the high profile festivals and in getting this award it demonstrates we as a company continue to aspire to offer a high quality service to all our customers.”

The additional categories Showsec was highly commended for were International Achievement Award (for B’estfest in Romania), Training Initiative Of The Year (for the Showsec Academy) and Contract Security Manager Of The Year (for Operations Director Simon Battersby.)

SHOWSEC BACK TO UNIVERSITY

Showsec has over two decades of experience of managing student union security across the UK. Services include 24 / 7 SU venue security, Fresher’s Ball security, Graduation Ball security and full concert security with specialised pit teams for visiting bands. Showsec continues to expand in this sector in 2009.

Queen Margaret’s

Showsec’s Scottish office has won the contract to provide all the security for the Queen Margaret’s University (QMU) Students Union in Edinburgh.

QMU is a small university in comparison with some of the others that Showsec secures, demonstrating the company’s flexibility to provide large or small teams and its unique personable approach, becoming a valued part of the friendly community.

Showsec’s Scottish Office Manager Bryan Lewis said:

“I carefully selected the team of SIA licensed professionals who would be permanently based at the union providing security on a daily basis. The characteristics of the team were an important factor due to the intimacy of the venue. They are already on first names terms with a lot of the students and established a good rapport and mutual respect.

Northumbria

Showsec’s Newcastle Office is entering its third year of providing security for Northumbria University’s Student Union. During this time the company has developed its specialised operation and been a significant factor in the SU winning several prestigious Best Bar None Awards, taking them from winning one in the first year to four in 2009.

The university welcomed the 2009 intake of Fresher’s for a week of partying and social activities to get them acquainted with their new home. Operations Executive Tony Hume deployed a large team managed by four supervisors, securing all three floors of the venue.

Nottingham

Nottingham Trent SU is another new contract for Showsec in 2009 where Operations Executives Patrick Leafe and Lee Brewin divised tailored crowd management plans to secure a three week fresher’s extravaganza! Record numbers of over 2,000 students descend the Byron House venue in the city centre for entertainment varying from world class DJs and bands, setting a president for entertainment throughout the city.

After the first weekend of operations at Trent, Trading and Business Development Manager Ian Goodyear congratulated the team for exceeding all expectations saying:

"To review and change the entire security service at Trent has been a very brave move for us, considering the service has remained in house for many years. Richard Church and the team at Showsec have been a tremendous help in reviewing the internal service and developing a package which, in keeping with our prime objective 'to improve the quality of the student experience', achieved the desired results in a very cost effective manner. I would recommend the services of Showsec to any Student Union establishment".

SHOWSEC PARTNER LIVE UK THE SUMMIT

Showsec continued it’s policy of supporting open debate and conversation in the music industry when they partnered the Live UK Summit 09 held in London on 7th and 8th October.

Showsec Operations Director Mark Logan addressed the VIP music business audience, when he spoke on a panel entitled “Criminal In Tent” alongside industry experts Jim King (Loudsound), Reg Walker (Iridium Consultancy) and Chris White (safety consultant). They discussed initiatives that have been set up this year to counter the new and growing trend of organised criminal gangs targeting festivals and their campsites.

Fellow panellist Jim King (Director of Loudsound) and organiser of Rockness, Creamfields, Camp Bestival and Bestival worked with Showsec across the summer at all of these festivals. Jim told the delegates:

“We developed a long term strategy with Showsec to disrupt the activities of what have become an increasingly sophisticated band of organised criminals targeting live events. Our operation at September’s Bestival on the Isle of Wight highlights the positive result of months of sharing intelligence and joint operations which included the police. We successfully minimised crime during the event and apprehended a gang of four individuals who appear to have been responsible for the majority of thefts over the weekend.”

The panellists concurred on the need for a central home office database to be set up that enabled sharing of intelligence between police forces across the UK. This would enable festival organisers and events security to be more efficient a countering the activities of these nationwide gangs.

Throughout the remainder of the summit Managing Director Mark Harding engaged in discussions with prominent industry delegates and politicians covering a range of issues concerning crowd management, event security, licensing legislation and wider commercial developments affecting the future of the music industry.

Europe’s most innovative concert and festival security supplier also provided the conference’s security professionals, ensuring the safety and comfort of influential music business leaders throughout the two day event.

SHOWSEC SELECTED BY BAND ON THE WALL

Showsec supplied the venue security when Manchester’s famous Band On The Wall music venue re-opened it’s doors this September, following a four million pound refurbishment.

Bristling with modern sound, lighting and video technology, Band on the Wall will deliver high quality production to match the wide variety of artists representing the best music from around the world. The not-for-profit venue is run by registered charity Inner City Music, which will also support a dynamic education programme in the venue extending into the community and local schools.

The Charities Marketing and Development Manager Malcolm Duffin said:
“We are delighted to have awarded Showsec the permanent contract to supply venue security for all of the live events hosted at Band On The Wall. We (the venue’s management) were familiar with the company’s excellent work and reputation at other venues and events in the region and following discussions they have tailored security plans that fit perfectly for the venue and the range of audiences we will be attracting.”

Showsec’s Senior Operations Executive Mark Wilcock and Supervisor Adrian Tull managed teams of between 3 – 6 security professionals over the opening weekend. The first show back featured Mica Paris and Julian Joseph playing to a largely invited VIP audience, whilst the following night old Mancunian favourites A Certain Ratio (ACR) revisited their venue of 25 years earlier to play a sold-out opening public night.

Showsec Area Manager Alan Wallace commented:

“We’re delighted to have been awarded the venue security contract for this diamond on the local venue crown, Manchester’s music and entertainment culture runs through the fabric of the building as much as is does through the veins of Showsec’s Manchester office.”
SHOWSEC EMPLOYEES GRADUATE

Showsec’s Patrick Leafe and Paul Trippier have joined the impressive growing group of Showsec managers who have achieved their Crowd Management Foundation Degree from Buckinghamshire New University.

The two year course is designed to reinforce the knowledge experienced crowd management professionals have gained through years working in event security. It teaches them to analyse the role from a theoretical perspective, whilst the second year centres on applying the theories learned back to practical applications.

Through classroom based activities and site visits all aspects of the industry are covered including crowd dynamics, the law, command and control and management structures.

A final project at the end of the second year involves creating a comprehensive event crowd management plan supported by an in depth research project which often leads students to conclusions that they might not previously have articulated.

Patrick explained:

“Our class consisted of 30 people all from different backgrounds such the home office, events industry, local authorities, the police and fire service which was good for networking resulting in good contacts for the future.

“It has given me more confidence when dealing with different client based issues and a clearer understanding of crowd planning and implementation of projects and the knowledge to deliver my role on a day to day basis.”

Paul commented:

“The foundation degree proves that even after 10 years in the crowd management industry you can still learn more. I have written over 100 crowd management plans (some for large festivals) and the course developed my thinking on ways of how to improve them.

“The biggest benefit for me has been identifying sources of information and referencing up-to-date legalisation that leads to making decisions based on best practice rather than relying on personal knowledge to know the answer. I also found the degree particularly useful for the non-crowd management specific aspects of management, such as the budget planning and project management modules.”
AUTOASSESS A RECIPE FOR SUCCESS

This Summer saw Showsec successfully launch their new ‘AutoAssess’ innovation, utilising new technologies to provide a comprehensive and environmentally friendly method of assessing and developing staff knowledge at work locations.

Highlighting the initiative within the company, AutoAssess was jointly developed by Nottingham Area Manager Richard Church and I.T. Operations Manager Matt Adamson and is the latest in a string of technological innovations developed completely in-house by Showsec.

Richard noted: “Not only can we use AutoAssess to gauge the working knowledge of our staff, but also identify trends, strengths and areas of opportunity for improvement in the way we train, nurture and brief our staff leading up to events.”

Matt said of the project: “The AutoAssess tool takes current industry methods of staff assessment and brings them into the 21st century. The utilisation of PDA technology melds perfectly with our Environmental Management Plan and demonstrates the benefits of the company’s close working relationships and coordination between operational and administrative departments.”

Plans are already underway to roll out AutoAssess at Showsec venues throughout the UK with the company remaining committed to a consultative implementation plan, working with venue managers and business partners alike.
U2's 360º WORLD TOUR EUROPEAN LEG FINISHES IN THE SAFE HANDS OF SHOWSEC

August saw U2 finishing the European leg of their much heralded 360º World Tour with 5 stadium shows in the UK. Showsec’s Operations Director Mark Logan and his experienced team of managers guided the show through 2 shows at Wembley Stadium, London, and single shows at Hampden Park, Glasgow, Don Valley in Stadium, Sheffield and the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff.

The company progressed it’s continuity in service to Live Nation touring acts by a consistent group of event security professionals on each show to micro manage the convoluted security processes established to operate the complex barrier system and the sheer size of the touring production. Paul Joy and John Hadland managed the front stage barrier and the intricate ingress and egress systems, while Dayo Adelugba managed the production and stage security and Keith Etchells the managed the demands of the dressing room areas for the one the biggest tours acts on today’s circuit. These management functions were then supported to at a local level by Paul Legge in London, Julian Kumah and Brendan Kellegher in Sheffield, Bryan Lewis and Alan Wallace in Glasgow and Ieuen Fury and Paul Trippier in Cardiff.

The scale of the project undertaken by Showsec is mirrored by the enormity of the production, with over 90 trucks and 25 buses required to move the operation from venue to venue. The five UK shows attracted over 350’000 customers and an average of 310 Showsec employed across each of the backstage operations at all the venues except Glasgow.

Mark Logan said:
“Yet again this is a testament to the experience and skill levels of management team in being able to deliver a show of this size consistently across venues that we don’t work at regularly. Moreover, it demonstrates the transferability of our staffs skills from arenas, academy venues, stadiums and festivals coupled with their ongoing motivation to provide the best possible service to the ticket buying public.”
SHOWSEC SECURES BESTIVAL

Showsec has supplied festival security at Bestival on the Isle of Wight since its first, fledgling event and has seen it enjoy six consecutive years of growth. The event attracted a capacity crowd of 45,000 in 2009.

Special Projects Manager Steve Reynolds co-ordinated the complex deployment of over 600 licensed staff drawn from several Showsec offices. The company planned a detailed festival security operation, which built on the previous years' experience, working with organisers and local authorities to ensure maximum levels of crowd safety and minimum levels of criminal activity.

Steve explains: "Bestival attracts a lively audience with very few behavioural issues. Our staff enjoy working at this event, which is reflected in our positive interaction with the crowds."

This positive relationship continues with the Hampshire Police, as Dog Sergeant David Steele commented: "We share intelligence and implement seamless joint operations with Showsec to ensure crowd safety in the key areas by reducing organised criminality.

“Senior management attends each others’ briefings, while our staff patrol the campsite together, where we pro-actively build rapport with the campers. We have implemented very stringent drug searches at the gate to highlight that we are taking these issues seriously, with great success."

The fans all made the short ferry journey across the Solent, as much for the fancy dress parade, Arcadia fire show and theatre as for the headline artists, which included Elbow, Mica, Lilly Allen, 2ManyDJ's and Massive Attack. With the logistical transport bottleneck of ferry availability, the organisers opened the site on the Thursday lunchtime for the second year. This allowed 20,000 people into the site and camping areas on Thursday, which eased pressure on the whole site on the Friday.

The security operation began with the build on 31st August and continued
through to 21st September.

Delivering this many staff onto the Island was also one of the toughest logistical challenges faced by the company. Showsec overcame this by booking ferries well in advance to secure travel capacity and built a Showsec campsite with luxury shower facilities and a nutritious menu for the team’s five day stay. Detailed staff briefings led to effective communication and ensured that everyone understood their roles and responsibilities.

The festival hours are 11am to 5am, so the site requires 24 hour security, with the emphasis shifting through the day from the ingress operation to crowd management during live acts, all night DJs and overnight campsite parties. A massive shift allocation system matched the skills and abilities of staff with the appropriate site positioning and hours.

The festival is the brainchild of Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank, who directs the
creative ethos of the festival, drawing on the production expertise of Festival Director Jim King and his company, Loudsound.

"We have worked with Showsec since year one,” says King. “Steve Reynolds and the team around him has a very good understanding of what we are trying to achieve. They are a part of the festival's senior management and their input to the event is invaluable."
SHOWSEC WINS CONTRACT TO SECURE NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY

Showsec’s Nottingham office has been awarded the contract to provide venue and event security for Nottingham Trent Students Union, spanning all three campuses of City, Clifton and Brackenhurst from October.

This latest expansion of the Nottingham office underlines the rewards of the company’s national ethos of introducing fresh techniques to professionalise event security. The contract also highlights the local respect developing in the Nottingham region and the positive reputation Showsec is earning in different quarters, particularly the sensitive area of student union security. The City campus operations of The Pulse and Sub-Bar will be re-opening in October following a re-brand and refurbishment works.

Ian Goodyear, Nottingham Trent’s Business Development Manager said:

“We have been aware of Showsec for some time and admired their performance in securing other high profile venues in the City. Following a thorough tender process we are already seeing a number of new approaches from the Showsec management team and we expect to improve the environment immediately for our students. As a key strategic partner Showsec will assist Nottingham Trent Students Union in our mission to provide safe venues and a culture of responsible drinking for our student members.”

Showsec’s Operations Executive Patrick Leafe has been with the company for 5 years, developing his operational and management skills through the internal professional development training available to all Showsec staff. He will head the seven days a week operation, which will vary from deploying over 40 staff for Friday and Saturday bar and club nights, while maintaining a smaller team of just a few licensed professionals working during the day.

This new venue further expands Showsec’s growing student union portfolio which includes Leeds Metropolitan University, Bristol University and Cardiff University, where a survey at the union in 2008 showed that 78% of students were happy with Showsec’s services compared to the 75% of students in 2007 who were unhappy with the previous security operation.

SHOWSEC GIVES A FINELY TUNED PERFORMANCE AT THE ROUNDHOUSE

Showsec provided security for the iTunes free gigs held at the Roundhouse everyday this July. A total of 60 bands passed through the venue from new unsigned bands to international artists like Oasis and Show Patrol, all requiring individual crowd management plans for every aspect of security from front of house to backstage.

Due to the gigs being allocated through free ticket competitions by Facebook, it was difficult for Showsec to predict the audience demographics. The full artist line-up was also often not confirmed until a few weeks before as surprise guests took to the stage with many scheduled headline performers.

Showsec’s Project Manager for the gig series at the Roundhouse, Emmalene Charlton explained:

“Everyday was different and the ever changing schedule often meant we were planning the evening’s operations the morning of the event. For example we knew that we had Mr Hudson performing and found out the night before that he would be joined by Kanye West to perform ‘Supernova’ which they collaborate on, meaning our whole plan needed to be changed to account for Kanye’s far bigger status.

“We were prepared for every eventuality with team ranging in size from 25 to over 45 staff, providing a complete security solution for the venue including artists and film crew security, backstage, front of house roles from door to bar security and specialised pit teams. The gigs often included an interactive element featuring audience participation, so our staff remained particularly vigilant during these times.”

A new ticketing system was put in place at the Roundhouse in the form of self service ticket machines where audiences scanned their printed confirmation and tickets were allocated. Showsec’s staff were on hand to offer fans guidance of this new system.

Showsec’s Roundhouse team are now preparing for highly acclaimed R & B artist Jay-Z’s exclusive London show on the 17th September to support his new album ‘The Blueprint 3’, tickets for which sold out in just six minutes.

TEN OUT OF TEN FOR INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION AT LOWLANDS FESTIVAL

Leading international event security companies Showsec (UK) and Dutch sister company The Security Company celebrated a decade of international co-operation managing the security at this year’s Lowlands Festival.

The sold-out three-day festival attracted 55,000 festival goers, with camping adjacent to the site and a bill featuring an eclectic entertainment programme of music and arts. Arctic Monkeys, The Prodigy, Snoop Dog and a Dave Grohl surprise guest band headlined some of the 11 stages, based in huge tents. There was also a theatre tent, a debating tent where politicians engaged with the audience around issues of the day and art installations.

Eighty Showsec security professionals travelled to Holland to blend expertise and operational skills alongside 640 of their counterparts from The Security Company (TSC).

Special Projects Manager Steve Reynolds spearheaded Showsec’s integration of knowledge and systems with TSC’s Managing Director Gerard Van Duykeren, Steve commented:

“There are a lot of parallels and a standardisation of systems that has evolved between our two companies, which have come out of working together on Lowlands over the past ten years. I can see a fresh ‘European ethos’ developing to provide safe, customer focused event security underpinned by us sharing our approaches to education, management systems and creating career opportunities for security professionals. The result is an ever improving service we can offer clients.”

On site, a relaxed Steve Reynolds accompanied by recent Academy graduate Yerodin Stewart managed the deployment of the UK teams, who had all completed the company’s specialist pit training and accreditation, focusing these skills in the front of stage pits.

TSC co-ordinated the 24/7 festival staffing, with senior management located in a sophisticated event control centre with modern camera technology, which enabled effective communication between their own staff and local emergency services. The event security operation even extended to an on-site courtroom for quick processing of simple offences (such as drug possession). Gerard Van Dykeren said:

“Mojo Concerts is a very safety conscious promoter and they have been very open to us introducing procedures to improve crowd management and security at Lowlands. They are very attentive to their audience and everyone working on the site so have fully supported our introduction of security innovations to improve their festival.
SHOWSEC CITY CENTRES OF ATTENTION

Road closures are a vital component of many events that utilize urban environments as part of their infrastructure. Showsec managed road closures in two of England’s leading cities over the first weekend of August., ensuring they caused minimum disruption and created safe event zones in two city centres.

Skyride Manchester was the first stop in a national tour designed to encourage one million people to take up cycling in the next five years. Over 7,000 cyclists of all ages and abilities joined Beijing gold medallists Victoria Pendleton, Jason Kenny and Ed Clancy along the 10km route from Albert Square to Manchester Velodrome in East Manchester and back to the city centre. This required the closure of many of Manchester’s main roads, 11km in total from 8am until 9pm.

Showsec’s Security Manager Alan Wallace coordinated the security operation with Manchester City Council and local Police, dividing the site into four subsections, each managed by a Showsec Supervisor, for effective communication and quick response times. A total of 200 SIA licensed staff were positioned along the route with 35 on bikes for easy movement.

Showsec manned the crowd barriers along the route and at the road closure points, providing information to drivers about the local diversions and alternative routes. The operation and manned barrier system was extremely effective with resident’s commenting that conditions on the road were vastly improved compared with previous local events.

Meanwhile, Birmingham City Council (BCC) hosted its biennial Caribbean Carnival, a colourful event showcasing Afro Caribbean art, culture, food and entertainment in the City. The Carnival attracted around 80,000 revellers throughout the day and featured a procession of over 30 floats leaving Handsworth Park at 1pm and arriving at Perry Park at approximately 4pm, where festivities continued until 9pm.

Steve Reynolds, Showsec’s Security Manager led 200 staff from four regions and coordinated the complex operation from the Birmingham office alongside BCC’s Head of Events Joan Durose.

Seventy SIA licensed staff implemented a rolling roadblock along the dual carriageway, which was part of the parade route, closing sections 20 minutes before the procession passed through and opening them soon after, resulting in minimum disruption to traffic flow.

Within the centre, Showsec advised drivers about the 80 different roadblocks around the five mile exclusion zone, ensured that attendees parked sympathetically so they did not disrupt local residents, checked car parking passes and secured the floats to ensure the safety of spectators and performers.

SAFETY A TOP PRIORITY FOR SHOWSEC ACADEMY

Showsec’s Safety and Projects Manager Phil Cobourne has commended the Showsec Academy’s integrated health and safety module, praising “the first class grounding it gives Associates to make health and safety a central priority in their approach to event security’.

Health and safety’s crucial role in crowd management and was a key factor when designing the Academy training course. The module takes the core principals of health and safety management from the Institute of Safety and Health (IOSH) and applies them to crowd management industry specific considerations through practical on-site assessment.

Phil Cobourne said:

“Our Associate graduates who have completed the first year at the Academy commented that the health and safety module provided a detailed insight into current safe system of work procedures, legislation and the assessment of risk. The course was specifically designed to interface with the operational requirements of crowd and safety management and presented a real-time perspective of the relationship between health and safety management systems and practicalities associated with the strategic planning for events.”
T IN THE PARK WITH SHOWSEC

For the first time Showsec provided all the security for the Slam Tent at T In The Park in Balado, Scotland from the 10th - 12th July. The slick security operation which included coordinating activities with the police helped organisers to reduce crime at the festival.

Forty one staff led by supervisors Bryan Lewis, Brendan Kallegah and Tony Hume provided security for 7,500 dance music fans who flocked to the tent to see headline performances by The Streets, Jeff Mills and 2 Many DJs. Safe crowd densities and crowd-movements in and out of the tent were achieved through vigilant monitoring and effective communications to vary staff controlling the flow across 8 entrances as per the security plan.

The operation was run by the Scotland Office, Showsec’s newest regional base, also utilising trained security professionals from the Newcastle and Leeds offices. The stage manager commended Showec, and particularly supervisor Dave Kershaw. who managed the flow of artists and their entourages at the entrance between stage and production.

Showsec’s Scottish Office Manager Bryan Lewis said:

“The tent is kept very dark for atmospheric reasons, which creates a challenging working environment for our ever vigilant security teams. During The Streets set front man Mike Skinner threw hundreds of glow sticks into the crowd and then asked everyone to throw them back, something that after catching one on the nose he said he would not be doing again!”
SHOWSEC FAMILY EXCEL AT CAMP BESTIVAL

Organisers heaped praise on Showsec following a tremendously successful Camp Bestival this July. In the events’ second year, audience numbers increased by an amazing 50% from 10,000 to 15,000, including 5,000 children.

Loud Sound’s Event Director Jim King commented:

“We were very happy with the operation undertaken by Showsec at Camp Bestival. They had the right staff with the right attitude for the show and helped make it a pleasant and relaxed experience for all concerned.”

Showsec supplied over 250 SIA licensed event security professionals to Camp Bestival, a new style of family oriented festival sited at Lulworth Castle on the glorious Dorset coastline. The festival is the brainchild of promoter Rob da Bank, produced in collaboration with Loud Sound, and its unique standing results from it setting out from the start to cater for families, rather than adding feature areas for children as an afterthought. The site is designed with a series of children’s activity areas and entertainment running through out the days

Whilst evening artists for the adults featured PJ Harvey, Florence and the Machine and the Cuban Brothers (who were carried through the audience to the stage on a Roman style divan by Showsec staff), the headline attraction of the 2009 weekend proved to be a Sunday morning appearance by Mr Tumble drawing 10,000 people to the main stage. He was followed by a full day of children’s oriented entertainment leading into more mature bands for the adult audience in the evening. This different style of festival required a different style of security, as Showsec’s Paul Trippier, Camp Bestival’s head of security, explained:

“Inherent in Showsec’s ethos is that no two events are treated the same, but this one required a radically different approach. We learned from the previous year and built on our experiences to produce a family focused crowd management plan.

“Going far beyond the required CRB checks, we selected staff from our national staff-pool who were used to working with and are comfortable with children. We dedicated four teams to managing lost children, which was a priority and we succeeded in reuniting all families, most within 20minutes to half-an-hour. Again it’s a different skill required from our staff to care for the well being of stressed parents and children, contracting the last festival when our main challenges were probably alcohol related and the pit team were implementing crowd surfing procedures. My over-riding memory of this festival would have to be the pit team, whilst remaining ever vigilant, joining in on ‘hands and shoulders’ to Mr Tumble: priceless.”

In addition to applying their friendly, helpful style of crowd management, a vigilant presence was maintained across the 42 acre camp site, which helped to reduce crime from the previous year (despite the event’s increased size) and the quietest members of the Showsec’s team were the two response teams on standby over the three days, such was the positive atmosphere at this most peacefull of festivals.

SHOWSEC AT B'ESTFEST IN ROMANIA

Showsec continued to improve international event security standards when they sent a management team to plan and manage the security and crowd control operations of B’estfest in Romania for the third successive year this July.

A rock festival of this scale was a new experience for both the Romanian audience and local security industry to manage. Showsec started a long term partnership with the organisers to provide training to extend the skills of the local security provider, leaving a legacy of good practice for the future.

B’estfest is the first annual music festival to be held in Romania and has grown from a three day festival with an audience of 50,000 in 2007, to a five day festival attracting 72,000 people in 2009. Headline acts have included Santana, Moby, Faithless, The Killers and Kasabian.

Richard Church led the Showsec team and took personal responsibility for backstage and artist security. Ahead of the first event, the team discussed methodology processes with the promoter and created a full crowd management plan. This also helped with site plans to achieve safe crowd density and crowd movements on site and during ingress and egress.

One of the key challenges was to change the oppressive approach to security that the local company had previously been using, which was far more confrontational than is customary in Western Europe and even involved security operatives carrying CS gas. Showsec provided training on procedures such as pit teams, door supervising and ejection policies which showed the local company how they could still achieve a safe, secure event in a far more customer-friendly manner.

Guido Janssens, CEO of B’estival and Managing Partner Emagic said:

“Showsec representatives (led by Richard Church) are now a key part of our security operation. Without them B’estival could not have grown and we could not have promoted more concerts by Iron Maiden, Metallica and Madonna in a local 20,000 capacity venue during the summer period.”
FRESH CROWD MANAGEMENT PLAN FOR NOTTINGHAM CITY COUNCIL

Nottingham City Council entrusted Showsec to create a new crowd management plan for its flagship event Splendour, which took place in the grounds of Wollaton Hall this July.

Over 15,000 people attended the family orientated event which featured a range of activates and entertainment from face painting to clowns as well as musical performances from Madness, The Progues, Fun Loving Criminals and Ash.

Showsec’s Operations Executive Patrick Leafe was attentive in understanding the ethos and style of a series of Council events, from providing security at other high profile annual celebrations including the Riverside Goose Festival, Bonfire Night and the Christmas Lights Switch On.

From the early planning stages of Splendour, Patrick and the Council listened to and developed the initial brief, outlined by Events Manager Bob Chaffin. Patrick became an invaluable source of advice to the Council, establishing emergency procedures and coordinating activities with all local authorities.

Bob Chaffin commented: “The professionalism and commitment of all the staff shone through on the day, they were a credit to the Showsec and a model for all future events.”
QUALIFICATIONS FOR ALL AT SHOWSEC

Showsec’s 'training for all' ethos extends beyond operational staff to include the all important staff from the admin, HR and financial teams, whose dedication keeps the company running as a cohesive unit.

HR Advisor Katie Farmer has been awarded the highly acclaimed Postgraduate Diploma in Personnel Management with the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. The course is assessed by a mix of coursework, practical assessments, exams and a work based project. Katie has already used and built upon her newly acquired skills to implement new policies and practises within the company.

Katie said: “The course was a real challenge as it is taught at Masters Level which meant that some of the work could be very complex. This challenge was heightened by completing it alongside a full time job, which I only got through thanks to the huge support I got from Showsec. The commitment that the company demonstrates to the education and development of staff at all levels and in all departments is amazing.”

Showsec Training Assistant Laura Barnes has recently passed the NVQ in Business and Administration at Level 3 with flying colours gaining more than a 90% pass and almost a year inside the predicted schedule. Through a combination of technical and written assessments, formal discussions monitored by an NVQ Assessor and evidence based reports, Laura had to examine her performance and put what she was learning into practice to meet specific targets.

Laura said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed sitting the course, not only do I feel better equipped to carry out my role but sitting the course has made me feel like a valued member of the Training Department.”

SHOWSEC SECURE MAD FERRET FESTIVAL IN MANCHESTER

Showsec’s Manchester office implemented fresh approaches that improved security at the Mad Ferret Festival in Platt Field Park, Manchester, this June.

This was the first year Showsec was contracted to work on the event by the organisers, who were keen to tackle several issues from previous festivals including over-crowding in some areas and securing the site perimeter.

Mad Ferret is an intimate festival with a capacity of just 6,000 and a large student and youth following, who come to see new and upcoming local bands and headlining DJ sets by Pendulum, Franz Ferdinand and the Streets. The festival aims to create a wider community feel musically and artistically across the Manchester area.

Mark Wilcock, Showsec’s Head of Security at Mad Ferret explained:
“We worked with the organisers from an early stage in planning the site layout; introducing new operational strategies to manage crowd movements.
“Last year over 250 people got in without tickets, which is a substantial loss of income. We implemented a steel shield fence perimeter as well as introducing observation towers and perimeter response teams; together these initiatives were successful in securing the event.
“Although it was a relatively small festival, in previous years uncomfortable crowding was experienced when the headline acts were playing, because the majority of the crowd wanted to be in the same place at the same time. It took careful crowd management planning and increased vigilance to minimise crowd density and maintain safety throughout the weekend.”

SHOWSEC COOL IN HYDE PARK HEAT

Showsec played a pivotal role in maintaining a relaxed summer festival vibe in Hyde Park this summer, as audiences, artists and productions enjoyed great music in sweltering weather over ten show-days.

Three days of Hard Rock Calling were headlined by Neil Young, The Killers and Bruce Springsteen, with some smaller shows on stage two preceding the huge Blur homecoming shows and Wireless Festival featuring Basement Jaxx and Kanye West.

At the most practical level keeping crowds cool was achieved by Showsec staff constantly distributing gallons of water to fans. Beyond that there were numerous strategies and approaches implemented to maintain calm and secure all areas of the Royal Park venue, from perimeter fence, to pit, to artists and VIP areas. The companies Head of Security for the events, Simon Battersby explained:

“This is the best team and security operation I have worked with in Hyde Park. We have really seen the benefits of the years of our in-house training coming through at all levels.

“I’ve been particularly pleased with the confident decision making throughout our management team, consistently taking the initiative in a wide variety of situations. There is a real depth of talent running through the management, which means that the security operations have been very assured and stress free.”

“This year we have implemented new egress plans to account for the closing of the Marble Arch subways, and the staff have adapted the new plans and to some very different audiences.

“The fact that we’ve had Showsec staff across the whole event drawn from different regional offices has improved co-ordination and made it easier to maintain consistency and quality.”

Consistency has been a key element of Showsec teams’ success. With up to 360 security professionals on site at any one time, many of the staff have previous experience at Hyde Park, and they have been at the heart of the growing understanding of what is required and expected by audiences and promoters.

That understanding is enhanced by Showsec’s expanding research programs over recent years. The company is building an ever increasing understanding about the audiences attending shows that can be utilised in the development of scientific fact based crowd management operations. This knowledge is also useful to promoter Live Nation in understanding their audience demographic, so at these shows Showsec has carried out extensive crowd surveys and shared to the information.

Keith Hackett, Showsec academy manager has also been on site as part of the companies training program, he said:
“We have the graduated academy 1 team fulfilling their operational potential onsite as part of this very effective management team, whilst the five members of academy 2, who are mid course, are being mentored on site extending their logistical and operational knowledge. It’s very exciting to see the improved skills the academy has given those people and how that impacts the wider operations in a positive way.”

John Probyn, Chief Operating Officer said:

‘Showsec once again played a critical role in the success of all events in Hyde Park this year, in what at times were very difficult circumstances due to incredibly high temperatures and large crowds who wanted to party. There ability to keep all staff highly motivated and consistently deliver a high standard and professional approach to looking after the safety and security of our customers, staff and guests, has proved once again that they are the market leaders in their field’.
SHOWSEC SCOTLAND SECURES ROCKNESS FESTIVAL

Rockness 2009 was the first major festival undertaken by Showsec’s Scottish office.

Staff based from Glasgow and Edinburgh were supported by further staff from other areas of the Northern region at the self proclaimed ‘most beautiful festival in the world’, which was secured by Showsec International for the fourth consecutive year in 2009.

Rockness takes place in the village of Dores nr Inverness on the banks of Loch Ness in Scotland and Showsec provides over 170 SIA licensed personnel to secure the Build and Break, Event arena and the Dores village area.

The festival in its fourth year was headlined by Bassment Jaxx, The Prodigy, Biffy Clyro and Orbital. With this diverse range of acts on 3 stages (of which 2 were covered) Showsec had to plan for crowd movement and dynamics for all of the acts. With this knowledge Showsec worked alongside the festival management from Loudsound to ensure crowd management plans were in place to ensure the festival ran smoothly.

SHOWSEC'S CAPITAL SUCCESS IN CARDIFF

Showsec showed versatility and professionalism as over 100,000 people descended on the Welsh capital, Cardiff, on the 12th June for a variety of events across the city centre.

During one of the UK’s busiest event weekends the company secured high profile events as diverse as the CAMRA annual Beer and Cider Festival at Cardiff International Arena and the Cardiff University Summer Ball in Castle Park.

Showsec’s Venue Manager at the CIA Yvonne Peterson provided advice to the CAMRA organisers in advance of their event. The CAMRA Beer Festival had been stewarded entirely by CAMRA volunteers, but two years ago the CIA and organisers looked to raise security standards and contracted Showsec. Since then they have achieved considerable improvements in the security operation by engaging licensed professionals and adopting fresh approaches in collaboration with the volunteers.

David Pascoe, Chief Steward GWBCF 2009 commented:

“I am extremely impressed by Showsec and how they integrated with our volunteers. As a consumer organisation, we have to maintain the public image of CAMRA and the Showsec employees have proved to be an excellent asset.

“In particular I would like to mention Yvonne Peterson for her outstanding support and guidance. Yvonne is easily approachable, always has time to talk and advice on any issue and has the wonderful ability to keep everyone around her calm during stressful times.”

Area Manager Paul Trippier said: “Showsec’s well deserved reputation for excellence in planning and executing multiple crowd management operations was again in evidence. Well over 100 staff, 15 supervisors and 3 managers were working at 3 sites spread in Cardiff, who all showed enthusiasm for their roles and excellent dedication; especially the 30 staff who headed off straight up to the Download Festival to augment the Showsec pit teams the next day.”
